Ruins, Ruins and More Ruins - Our trip to Aphrodasias

Aphrodisias, a less well-known Roman ruins also built on a pre-existing sacred site was our next stop. Hidden away down a winding road, we entered this sprawling museum with very few other tourists. It is a really nice place to explore. Taylan took us on in in-depth walking tour around some of the grounds, explaining the history and details of the site. Then he turned us loose to visit the excellent new museum and other exhibits.

This ancient spa town had a really big shallow pool for taking the waters, with a covered portico all around it for merchants to set up shop. The pool was easily 3-4 Olympic sized pools long. There were also dwellings, temples, and a large sports arena, likely for chariot racing, as well as a nice amphitheater. The site was "discovered" in the 50's when someone visited the village which had taken it over and morphed the ruins into housing and barns or whatever they needed. There was a excellent photo journal exhibit of how the village looked when it was "rediscovered" it, before they moved the folks out and the museum in.

After lunch at a bucolic, family run roadside restaurant, we sped off in our comfy coach towards our final destination... Kuşadası
